Cozy and relaxing games

When you really just want to chill. Mostly atmospheric games with pretty art style, light puzzles and generally a non demanding play style.

Journey

Steam | Epic | PlayStation

Genre: walking simulator
Playtime: 2-3 hours

You wake up among piles of sand, with a mountain in the distance. You walk towards the mountain. 10/10 game, please play.

The PC ports have some bugs going on, there's a guide to restore the sand luminosity and also attempts to fix dynamic music not being dynamic, though that's not a full fix and I recommend at least watching a PS playthrough of the sandsurfing bit if you can't play the PS version.

ABZÛ

Steam | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo Switch

Genre: walking swimming simulator
Playtime: 2-3 hours

Swim among the fish, watch the fish, touch the fish. Many fishes to be seen. There is a sunfish.

Sky: Children of the Light

Steam | PlayStation | iOS | Android | Nintendo Switch (free!)

Genre: walking/flying simulator, social game
Playtime: about 5 hours for the first playthrough

Basically Journey but in the sky, with a lot more multiplayer/(not as horrible) live service features, but also perfectly playable solo. Fly in the clouds, meet spirits of the past, collect candles, collect customization features for your character. A bit grindy but fun to just bounce around, gets new content every month or two.

Shape of the World

Steam | PS4 | Xbox One | iOS | Nintendo Switch

Genre: walking simulator
Playtime: 2-3 hours

Interactive ambient/electronic music album. Walk through pretty landscapes, plant trees, listen to the music evolving. Great for when you just want to have a calm and relaxing time and/or calm yourself.

AER Memories of Old

Steam | Epic | PS4 | Xbox One | Nintendo Switch

Genre: walking/flying simulator
Playtime: 3-5 hours

Fly around as a bird, walk on small isles as a human, solve puzzles and explore the world and its history during your pilgrimage.

Terra Nil

Steam | GOG | Epic | Nintendo Switch

Genre: city builder
Playtime: around an hour per map

Reverse city builder. You start with a polluted wasteland and you need to reintroduce flora and fauna, and then pack all your equipment and leave the now healthy pristine and healthy biome.

Cloud Gardens

Steam | Itch | GOG | Xbox | Nintendo Switch

Genre: city(?) builder
Playtime: 20+ hours (there's SO many levels)

Overgrow small abandoned wasteland dioramas with plants of your choice. Also includes a diorama builder.

Audiosurf 2

Steam

Genre: rhytm game
Playtime: as long as you want

Ride your own music! Pick a track from your own library and the game generates a track for you. Lots of skins and options for how you want the track to look with the option to make your own, and the same for the exact playstyle. Want to just hit color block and avoid grays? Or do you want to colormatch? Different speeds? Amount of blocks? You got it.

The first Audiosurf is pretty good too, just with less customization options.

Distance

Steam | PlayStation

Genre: atmospheric racer
Playtime: 2 hours for the base story

A bit darker for this page and with less chill controls, but still incredibly pretty to look at. There's an incredibly atmospheric story mode and a lot of community levels, as well as random track generator. Incredible soundtrack and fun multiplayer.

Shelter 2

Steam

Genre: walking simulator
Playtime: 3-6 hours

You are a lynx mom and you need to take care of your cubs as you raise them and guide them through the world. Very pretty storybook art style. Might make you very sad.

The first game is also great, for a more linear experience as a badger mom.

Katamari Damacy

Steam | PS2 (original) | PS4 (remake) | Xbox One | Nintendo Switch

Genre: r o l l
Playtime: 6-8 hours for the story

Ever wanted to just roll up all the things into a big pile? Start small, grow big. The first few levels you're rolling up small household items, then you grow big enough to roll up people, and then whole buildings and more. The title screen track haunts my dreams.
